Rex Ryan Name To Watch For Chiefs’ DC Job

Sources have told Adam Schefter that former Jets and Bills HC Rex Ryan is a name to watch for the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator vacancy.

Schefter adds that Ryan has been approached about potential defensive coordinator opportunities in recent years.

This comes shortly after the news that the Chiefs have fired DC Bob Sutton

Ryan, 56, began his coaching career back in 1987 at Eastern Kentucky. He worked for a number of schools before being hired by the Ravens as their DL coach in 1999.

Ryan eventually worked his way up to assistant HC/defensive coordinator before the Jets hired him as their head coach in 2009. He was fired after six years in New York and immediately hired by the Bills as their head coach.

Buffalo would fire Ryan after two seasons and he’s been working as an analyst for ESPN the past few years.

For his career, Ryan’s teams produced a record of 61-66 (48 percent), which includes two postseason appearances and two trips to the AFC Championship game.

  1. Ironic! Considering the recently fired Bob Sutton was on Rex Ryan’s staff with the Jets. I think Andy Reid and Rex Ryan would clash personality wise. And Reid’s Chiefs have the identity of an offensive juggernaut, so to speak. I think Reid will switch it up to a 4-3 now. Bringing Houston and most likely resigned Ford off the edges all game. Maybe Steve Spagnuolo might be on Reid’s radar. Spags has 4-3 Super Bowl winning defense experience and has coaching lines to the Eagles.
Rex Ryan would be a great fit for any team looking for a 3-4 DC. Add in the fact that any players Ryan coaches LOVE playing for him.
The union of HC and DC, I would like to see happen, would be Ryan and Belichick. The current Pats’ DC Flores is the lead for the ‘Phins job. And what better way to add more drama in Foxboro then a Ryan and Belichick defensive love fest. If Ryan could get over the “I’m not kissing Belichick’s rings or ass” stigma. Both of these coaches could extend the Pats’ dynasty at least till Tom Brady turns 50.
