Saints Plan To Start QB Teddy Bridgewater Through Week 8 Bye

The Saints plan to use backup QB Teddy Bridgewater as their primary starter through at least the team’s bye in Week 8 while Drew Brees is sidelined, per Jason La Canfora

The team expects Brees to be out a minimum of six weeks, possibly longer, as he recovers from thumb surgery to repair torn ligaments suffered in Week 2.

La Canfora also notes the team will continue to use backup QB Taysom Hill in specific packages similar to how he was used when Brees was the starter.

Bridgewater elected to re-sign with the Saints this offseason on a one-year, $7.25 million deal, choosing New Orleans ahead of an offer from the Dolphins.

Bridgewater, 26, is a former first-round pick of the Vikings back in 2014. He played out the final year of his four-year, $6,849,502 rookie contract after Minnesota declined to pick up his fifth-year option.

Bridgewater signed a one-year, $6 million contract with the Jets last year that included just $500,000 guaranteed. However, the Jets later traded him to the Saints during the preseason.

In 2019, Bridgewater has appeared in one game for the Saints and completed 17 of 30 pass attempts for 165 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for five yards.
