Saints Trying Out Former Ravens S Matt Elam During Minicamp

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reports that the former Ravens S Matt Elam is trying out for the Saints during their rookie minicamp this weekend.

Elam has served multiple suspensions and had off-the-field issues in the past few years. Although, the drug charges he was facing last year were dropped.

Elam was charged with one count of cannabis possession, one count of possession of cannabis with intent to sell or deliver, and one count of possession of a controlled substance after he was arrested back in February of last year following a traffic stop.

Elam, 26, was taken with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2013 draft. He just finished the final year of his four-year, $6.767 million rookie contract that included $5.439 guaranteed.

Elam’s 2015 season ended after he suffered a torn biceps. However, Elam wound up being suspended one game without pay for violating the NFL substance abuse policy.

The Ravens declined to pick up Elam’s fifth-year option that would have cost them over $5.6 million in 2017.

In 2016, Elam appeared in nine games for the Ravens and recorded four total tackles.
