Teams Expected To Have 80-Man Rosters For Training Camp, No Preseason Games

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that NFLPA leadership said in a conference call with players on Tuesday that roster sizes are expected to be 80 players for the start of training camp.

According to Rapoport, NFL GMs are already working under the assumption that they’ll have 80 roster spots for training camp.

Tom Pelissero adds that the NFLPA told players that there will be no preseason games this year.

The union is still pushing for a longer ramp-up period during training camp.

Beyond that, Pelissero says the two parties have a general agreement on voluntary and high-risk opt-outs for players. Per Pelissero, there’s a general agreement on a stipend if games lost this year.

Pelissero mentions that the NFL Management Council Executive Committee hasn’t signed off on the 80-man roster yet. There was reportedly a discussion on giving teams the option of keeping 90 and dividing the roster with 10 remaining on standby. However, the NFLPA has told players they want all teams to follow one rule.

There has been talk for over a month now that rosters could be preemptively cut this year to limit the number of players in training camp, so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

Most teams are closer to the 90-man roster limit right now, which means you can expect there to be a number of cuts made in the coming weeks.

We’ll have more regarding potential changes as the news is available.
