Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins Could Be Available For Trade This Offseason?

Update:

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Texans’ asking price for WR DeAndre Hopkins in a potential trade will be a lot and could include a first-round draft pick and more.

  • According to Wilson, the Texans have rejected overtures in the past for Hopkins and it would take a look for them to part ways with an elite player like him.
  • Meanwhile, Mike Silver says his understanding of the Hopkins trade talk is that the Texans have consistently received feelers about trading the star receiver over the past couple of years. However, they’ve rebuffed all offers up to this point and it would probably take something “eye-popping” to get their attention.
  • Michael Lombardi says Peter King’s report is “dead-on accurate.” Last year, Lombardi mentioned that there could be a potential big-time receiver available for trade and he now says he was referring to Hopkins.

Peter King says two teams told him over the weekend to keep an eye on the possibility of the Texans trading star WR DeAndre Hopkins this offseason.

King mentions that Hopkins has three years and a reasonable $40 million left on his contract and Houston would take just a $3 million cap hit by moving him.

Beyond that, King explains that the Texans are in “draft hell” and don’t own a top-50 pick in either 2020 or 2021, despite having areas of need to fill.

King mentions that Patriots, 49ers, Giants and Dolphins as potential matches. Although, he says it would take “a big pick to pry Hopkins” loose from the Texans.

Last year, Jay Glazer reported that teams had contacted the Texans about a potential trade for Hopkins, but it would take “an awful lot” for the Texans to trade him.

Ultimately the trade deadline came and went without Hopkins being moved, but there was reportedly trade interest in him last year.

Hopkins, 27, was taken with the No. 27 overall pick back in 2013. He’s currently in the third year of his five-year, $81 million extension that includes $49 million guaranteed.

Hopkins stands to make a base salary of $12.5 million for the 2020 season.

In 2019, Hopkins appeared in 15 games for the Texans and caught 104 passes for 1,165 yards receiving and seven touchdowns. He also rushed for 18 yards.

We’ll have more regarding Hopkins as the news is available.
