Tom Brady Restructures Contract To Free Up Some Cap Space

Brian McIntyre of Mac’s Football Blog reported earlier in the week that Patriots QB Tom Brady restructured his contract which wound up creating an extra $7.2 million in cap space for the team.

League sources confirmed that Brady had a $15.2 million cap number which was reduced to $8 million for the 2012 season. McIntyre mentions that Brady’s cap numbers moving forward will be $21.8 million for each of the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

The move is a little strange because the Patriots are in pretty good shape cap wise, but I’m sure it can’t hurt to have some extra room to work with. Maybe they’re hoping to lockup tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez at some point in the near future.
