Veteran DE Robert Ayers Retires From NFL

Veteran DE Robert Ayers announced Tuesday that he’s officially retiring from the NFL.

Ayers, 33, is a former first-round pick of the Broncos back in 2009. He spent five seasons in Denver before signing on with the Giants in 2014.

After two years in New York, the Buccaneers signed Ayers to a three-year, $19.5 million contract that includes $10.5 million guaranteed. He was set to make a base salary of $5 million for the 2018 season when the Buccaneers released him.

The Lions later signed Ayers to a contract last year only to release him the next day.

For his career, Ayers recorded 265 tackles, 35 sacks, nine forced fumbles, three recoveries, a defensive touchdown, and 13 pass defenses over the course of 120 games and nine seasons.
