Vikings Discussing Extension For DE Stephen Weatherly

Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press reports that the Vikings are considering a potential contract extension for DE Stephen Weatherly.

Weatherly tells Tomasson that he’s hoping to get a deal done with Minnesota.

“There’s only one more year left,’’ Weatherly said. “If that’s what they want, by all means I’ll be down for (an extension). If they think I’m good enough to keep around, then that would be amazing. I was drafted in the seventh round and worked my way up. That would be a pretty good story to tell my kids one day.’’

Tomasson spoke with Weatherly’s agent, Blake Baratz, who mentioned that the two sides have had discussions about a potential deal.

We’ve had some discussions,’’ Baratz said. “He definitely would like to be here. I know the Vikings want him here. They don’t have the most cap room in the league, so who knows if it will happen before this season, during this season, after this season?

“I don’t think there’s a timetable on it, but I think it makes sense for both parties. A lot of things have got to play out first, but I think it’s a desire on both parties.’

Weatherly, 25, is a former seventh-round pick of the Vikings back in 2016. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $2.42 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $720,000 for the 2019 season.

Weatherly is in line to be an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

In 2018, Weatherly appeared in all 16 games for the Vikings and recorded 35 tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and a pass defense.
