Browns Offensive Coordinator Rumors

Update:

Nate Ulrich reports that the Browns will not interview Marty Mornhinweg for offensive coordinator job, despite previous reports that said he was likely to meet with Cleveland.

  • Mary Kay Cabot reports that the Browns have canceled their interview with Raiders offensive assistant Al Saunders that was scheduled for Wednesday.
  • Cabot adds that the meeting has not been rescheduled and no reason was given.

This full list of candidates for the Browns offensive coordinator job includes:

  • Former Bears HC Marc Trestman
  • Jets assistant HC Anthony Lynn
  • Raiders QBs coach John DeFilippo
  • Raiders senior offensive assistant Al Saunders
  • Packers OC Tom Clements
  • Former Bears quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh
  • TEs coach Brian Angelichio
  • Jim Hostler
  • Mike Martz
  • Charlie Weis
  • Rams QB coach Frank Cignetti

Ian Rapoport reports that the Browns interviewed Rams QB coach Frank Cignetti for their vacant offensive coordinator job.

———-

Jeremy Fowler reports that the Browns are expected to interview former Jets and Eagles coordinator Marty Mornhinweg this week at the Senior Bowl for their offensive coordinator vacancy.

NFL teams are moving quickly to get their coaching staffs in place this week, but this is the first reported interest in Mornhinweg we’ve seen up to this point.

———-

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Browns recently interviewed former Rams HC Mike Martz for their offensive coordinator position.

  • Rapoport refers to Martz as a “wildcard” for Cleveland.

ESPN’s Adam Caplan reported on Monday that the Browns are expected to interview Jets assistant HC Anthony Lynn and Raiders senior offensive assistant Al Saunders for their offensive coordinator vacancy either Tuesday or Wednesday in Mobile, Alabama.

Mary Kay Cabot reported earlier in the day that Packers OC Tom Clements is also on Browns’ radar .

Ian Rapoport reports that the Browns are meeting with former Bears HC Marc Trestman on Wednesday regarding their offensive coordinator vacancy.

  • Rapoport adds that Raiders QBs coach John DeFilippo gets his interview with the Browns on Friday.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Browns have requested permission to interview Jets assistant head coach Anthony Lynn for the job as well.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Cleveland Browns have requested permission to interview Cowboys OC Bill Callahan and passing game coordinator Scott Linehan for their offensive coordinator position.

  • According to Schefter, the Jaguars have also requested permission to interview Callahan.

———-

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Browns have requested permission to interview 49ers OC Greg Roman, Raiders offensive assistant Al Saunders, Raiders QBs coach John DeFilippo, and former Bears HC Marc Trestman for their offensive coordinator vacancy.

Charlie Weis has also come up as a potential option for the Browns now that Kyle Shanahan has departed.

———-

Mary Kay Cabot reports that former Bears quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh is on the Browns’ radar for their offensive coordinator job.

  • Cabot points out that Cavanaugh has a long history with Browns coach Mike Pettine.

Other speculative options for the Browns vacant offensive coordinator job include: former Bears HC Marc Trestman, Raiders QBs coach John DeFilippo, and Charlie Weis.

———-

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that former Bears HC Marc Trestman would be interested in talking to the Browns regarding their offensive-coordinator vacancy.

The Buccaneers and Jaguars have both shown interest in Trestman in the past week or so, but Tampa Bay has already hired Dirk Koetter. On top of that, a report from Thursday mentioned that the Jaguars don’t have Trestman at the top of their list, so this could be one of his best opportunities, depending on Cleveland’s level of interest.

————

Multiple reports have confirmed that the Browns are “parting ways” with OC Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains, so changes are once again coming to Cleveland’s coaching staff.

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports mentions that the Browns interviewed Falcons OC Dirk Koetter for their head-coaching vacancy last year, and Raiders QBs coach John DeFilippo for their offensive coordinator job.

Koetter’s future in Atlanta appears to be over as they are in the process of finding a new head coach. Koetter has already interviewed with the Buccaneers, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Browns bring him in for an interview in the coming weeks.

As strange as this sounds, Jason La Canfora reports that Charlie Weis is likely to be among the  possibilities to replace Shanahan in Cleveland. Weis has had success in the past as an offensive coordinator, even though his record as a head coach has been less than stellar.

We’ll have more updates regarding the Browns and their offensive coordinator position as the news is available.
