Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that 49ers LBs coach Jason Tarver is in “good position” to be their next defensive coordinator.

Multiple reports have confirmed that the 49ers have fired DC Eric Mangini on Friday, which came just a day after Texans LBs coach Mike Vrabel, but he he elected to turn down the job.

During his press conference on Wednesday, new HC Chip Kelly described what he’s looking for in a coordinator.

I’m looking for a defensive coordinator that can shut people out,” Kelly said. “I’m a base 3-4 guy.

Tarver, 41, began his NFL coaching career with the 49ers as an offensive quality control assistant before being promoted a few times over the course of 10 years in San Francisco. He elected to depart for the defensive coordinator position at Stanford in 2011 before later joining the Raiders in the same position just one year later.

The 49ers brought Tarver back as their linebackers coach last season.

In 2015, Mangini’s defense ranked No. 29 yards allowed, No. 27, in pass yards, No. 29 in rush yards, and No. 18 in points allowed, so there’s plenty of work to be done next year.
