49ers Were Interested In Bringing Back Vic Fangio As DC, But Bears Blocked The Move

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee hears that the 49ers were interested in bringing back Vic Fangio as their defensive coordinator. However, he’s under contract with the Bears and they blocked San Francisco from hiring Fangio.

There were actually some rumors during the season that Fangio could be let go by the Bears but the HC John Fox later refuted the talk.

The 49ers are likely trying to set up their coaching staff under Kyle Shanahan once he’s officially hired as their new head coach.

Fangio, 58, began his NFL coaching career with the Saints back in 1986 as their linebackers coach. He spent nine years in New Orleans before departing to become the Panthers’ defensive coordinator in 1995.

He worked for a number of teams including the Colts, Texans and Ravens before he was hired by the 49ers as their defensive coordinator in 2011. After the 49ers decided to hire Jim Tomsula as their head coach, Fangio departed for the Bears’ defensive coordinator position.

In 2016, the Bears ranked No. 15 in total yards allowed, No. 24 in points allowed, No. 27 in rushing yards allowed and No. 7 in passing yards allowed.
