Chiefs Claim Former 49ers WR Kyle Williams

Update:

Former 49ers WR Kyle Williams tweets that he has been claimed by the Kansas City Chiefs.

On Tuesday, San Francisco parted ways with Williams in order to make room for Michael Crabtree who is returning from an Achilles injury.

Williams, 25, was relieved of his returner duties this weekend, which isn’t all that surprising given that he is only averaging 5.1 yards-per-punt return and 19.1 yards on kick returns. Williams has just 12 receptions for 113 yards over the course of eight games this season, which has led to just 27 total targets.

The Chiefs have made multiple trades with the 49ers this season, so they have clearly kept an eye on their roster. We’ll have to see Williams is able to carve out some playing time in their offense.

Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area confirms that the 49ers have in fact informed WR Kyle Williams of his release.

ESPN’s Adam Caplan first reported that the San Francisco 49ers are waiving WR Kyle Williams.

  • Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that the 49ers are expected to add rookie LB Nick Moody to the active roster at some point this week.

The release doesn’t come as much of a surprise with Mario Manningham back in the lineup and Michael Crabtree close to returning as well.

He will be subject to waivers, but it’s doubtful that anyone will claim him this week.
