AFC East Notes: Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Patriots

Bills

  • Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic thinks there is a possibility that the Bills look to trade up from the No. 54 pick after giving up their first-round pick in a trade with the Vikings for WR Stefon Diggs.
  • According to Buscaglia, three needs for the Bills moving forward include edge rusher, offensive lineman and nickel corner who fits their system and could be a long-term upgrade.
  • Regarding potential edge rushers who could be available to Buffalo in round two, Buscaglia lists Zack Baun, Terrell Lewis, Josh Uche and Julian Okwara.
  • Buscaglia also said that T Cody Ford will likely be the Bills starting right tackle going forward, despite the fact that the team may look to the draft for more help on the offensive line.
  • Matt Miller of B/R says sources expect the Bills to continue trying to add impact playmakers and speed at skill positions in the draft this year.

Dolphins

  • According to Matt Miller of B/R, multiple league sources have told him that the Dolphins aren’t convinced Tua Tagovailoa is their best option and could instead target Oregon QB Justin Herbert.
  • Miller says the buzz around the NFL is that Herbert has the most fans in the Dolphins’ draft room.
  • According to Armando Salguero, the Dolphins “love” Alabama OT Jedrick Wills.

Jets

  • Ralph Vacchiano notes that Douglas created some speculation about Jadeveon Clowney on Wednesday when he said the team is “going to do our due diligence on everybody that’s out there — especially at the edge-rushing position.”
  • Vacchiano reports that there is no indication that Douglas is willing to spend that kind of money on any one player in free agency. And a team source says Douglas’ plan is based on being “disciplined financially” and creating “flexibility.”
  • John Clayton notes that Jadeveon Clowney has apparently dropped his yearly demand to around $17 million. Clayton notes that while Seattle still has a chance to re-sign him, both the Jets and Titans are talking to Clowney about making him the third highest-paid outside linebacker in a 3-4.
  • Matt Miller says every source he spoke to thinks the Jets will take an offensive tackle at No. 11 overall.
  • Miller does, however, say that the Jets are “very high” on Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
  • New Jets WR Breshad Perriman expects to bring some play-making ability to the team’s offense: “I bring a lot of speed, a lot of big play-making ability to this team. I can’t wait to get to work to prove that anyone who has doubt in their mind is wrong.” (Ralph Vacchiano)
  • New Jets OL Connor McGovern said his contract includes language that, if he doesn’t pass a physical, it would void. He has yet to take a physical, given that most players are unable to do so. (Connor Hughes)
  • As for signing with the Jets, McGovern said: “It was a team that I thought had a real opportunity to win a lot of games… make the playoffs and hopefully win a Super Bowl … The reason I’m with the Jets is that I think they got the coaches and players to win a Super Bowl.” (Manish Mehta)

Patriots

  • New England RB James White spoke about moving on from Tom Brady, and who could take over at quarterback between Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham: “We’re confident in Stidham, confident in Hoyer, whoever it happens to be. (Stidham’s) willing to learn, willing to take the coaching and keeps fighting no matter what the situation is.” (NESN)
  • Matt Miller of B/R mentions that the one thing he has consistently heard about the Patriots is that Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels like Jarrett Stidham as the quarterback of the future and believe he’s ready to take over for Tom Brady.
