AFC North Notes: Bengals, Browns, Ravens

Bengals

Bengals WR A.J. Green noted how quickly his career has gone by upon seeing the NFL schedule on Thursday. He also mentioned that he has been on a bumpy road after missing the last year and a half with injuries.

“It’s crazy how fast it goes. This is year ten,” said Green, via Jeff Hobson of Bengals.com. “Not playing the last year and a half, it’s really zoomed me into being more focused, not taking things for granted. The first seven years it was like, ‘Oh, this is easy. No speed bumps. Making the Pro Bowl every year.’ Then it’s been injury after injury. It’s a process of trying to be great. You play this game long enough, you’re going to have these bumps in the road and you have to keep fighting. That’s where I am. Still fighting. I still love the game. I’m just ready to get back and play.”

Green also mentioned that he has been in contact with first-overall pick QB Joe Burrow and says he is looking forward to catching passes from him before the season begins.

“We’ve been talking back and forth. We were talking (texting?) yesterday and I know he wants to get together and throw somewhere,” Green said. “I told him wherever he is, we’ll come to him. I don’t know where, when, how. It’s all who can fly where and when. He’s the quarterback. He makes his location and we have to get there.”

Browns

Browns QB Baker Mayfield spoke on Cleveland’s schedule release show on Thursday about the team’s offseason additions.

โ€œItโ€™s been very exciting for me just all the moves theyโ€™re making, the guys theyโ€™re bringing in,โ€ Mayfield said, via Scott Petrak. โ€œObviously talented guys, but mentality-wise and with the mindset that they have, I think weโ€™re putting the right pieces together. Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re trying to take advantage of this time right now, talking to these guys as much as I can, getting to know them because right now would be the first stages of getting everything out of the way, laying that foundation that we can. But weโ€™re doing the best we can.โ€

Ravens

Tyler Dunne of Bleacher Report spoke with Ravens WR Marquise Brown, who back in March, guaranteed Baltimore would win a Super Bowl in 2020.

“Hey, my mom always said, ‘If you want something, you have to speak it into existence,'” said Brown. “So, Super Bowl next year. The Ravens. You have to speak it into existence. … It’s going to happen. It’s going to happen, man.”

Brown also discussed playing with a Lisfranc injury which left him unable to push off the arch of his foot. Instead, he used his middle three toes during the 2019 season, which left them looking deformed. Brown later had surgery, and once the screws were removed his foot strengthened on its own.

“It was frustrating because I know what I can do and I’m making plays, but even when I’m making plays, it doesn’t feel right,” Brown said. “Everything. I had to try harder than I usually do. To run, for me, is easy. Last year, it wasn’t easy. Every step was like, ‘Ahhh…’ I’m a rookie, so you don’t want to think too much. And going out there, I was like, ‘How am I going to react if I land on my foot? How am I going to get around him?’ So there was a lot to think about.”
