AFC Notes: Bills, Jets, Patriots

Bills

  • Adam Schefter reports that Bills QB Josh Allen received a false positive COVID test result, which is why he missed practice Sunday. The good news is that Allen is expected to practice Monday after going through proper protocols.
  • WGR 550’s Sal Capaccio notes the Bills could elect to cut FB Patrick DiMarco, who’s missed time with a neck injury, and go with impressive UDFA FB Reggie Gilliam to save $1.14 million.
  • Capaccio rules out the Bills keeping both K Stephen Hauschka and sixth-round K Tyler Bass. Hauschka is more consistent but still struggles from beyond 50 yards, while Bass has the stronger leg.

Jets

  • Per ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the Jets plan to use S Marcus Maye in the same role they previously had built for S Jamal Adams, moving him all around the formation in coverage and potentially on blitzes.
  • Cimini reiterates his sources say the Jets don’t plan to trade for Jaguars DE Yannick Ngakoue because his $17.8 million franchise tag is too pricy for a potential one-year rental.
  • The Jets are hoping WR Breshad Perriman (knee) is back tomorrow after dealing with some swelling on Saturday. (Connor Hughes)
  • Jets HC Adam Gase said LB Patrick Onwuasor has no ligament tears in his knee, but is still being evaluated to see how long he’ll be out. (Brian Costello)
  • Gase mentioned that they had to cancel their walkthrough last night due to the testing issue that produced 10 positives.

Patriots

  • ESPN’s Mike Reiss writes Patriots RB Damien Harris has been impressive and is laying his claim to a potential starting job this year.
  • Reiss adds Patriots 2019 third-round OT Yodny Cajuste appears to be well behind other options to replace Marcus Cannon as the starting right tackle.
  • Patriots WR Jakobi Meyers is also in a battle for a roster spot as a number of undrafted receivers have had really good camps so far, per Reiss.
  • Reiss mentions the Patriots have touched base with CB J.C. Jackson on a potential extension. The former undrafted free agent will be eligible for restricted free agency this offseason.
  • Cam Newton and Brian Hoyer got the bulk of the work during Sunday’s practice and Reiss mentions that it feels like Jarrett Stidhamโ€™s status in the quarterback picture is “fading” the last two practices.
  • NESN’s Doug Kyed says he has “no idea” whether the Patriots will trade CB Joejuan Williams, but notes that New England opted to trade away CB Duke Dawson to the Broncos last year.
  • According to Field Yates, the Patriots increased DT Lawrence Guy‘s salary by $200,000 for 2020 while also increasing his per-game roster bonuses by $700,000.
  • Yates notes that two of Guy’s playing time incentives were removed which totaled $900,000 but is still eligible to earn a total of $5 million through 2020.
