AFC Notes: Broncos, Chiefs, Jaguars

Broncos

In addition to their position coach, Reggie Herring, the Broncos’ inside linebackers also get to hear from HC Vic Fangio, who got his start in the league as a LBs coach.

“It’s awesome,” Broncos LB Josey Jewell said via Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post. “It’s two linebackers coaches so when we screw up out there or do something good, (Fangio is) going to let you know and you’re getting double the coaching. Every time something happens, even if you played it so-so, he’ll tell you and so will Coach Herring.”

  • O’Halloran doesn’t expect the Broncos to let CB Chris Harris go in anticipation of a 2021 third-round compensatory pick, as there are too many variables to count on in that scenario.
  • If Denver’s season doesn’t go well, O’Halloran says Harris could be a valuable trade piece.

Chiefs

Chiefs HC Andy Reid said he didn’t know how contract talks with DT Chris Jones were going.

“I don’t know that, I don’t how they’re talking,” Reid said via the official team site. “Or are you talking about me? I haven’t talked to him. We just go, if you’re here, you get better. If you’re not, you don’t.”

Jaguars

Jaguars senior defensive assistant Dom Capers says he’s looking forward to being in a new role this year.

“This is a totally different role for me and I’m looking forward to it,” Capers said, via the Florida Times-Union. “I’ve been around enough staffs and put them together, so I know how important staff chemistry is. Hopefully, I have a good enough feel to figure out what my role will be and how I can contribute the most. Believe me, I have no agendas.”

Capers was considered for the Cardinals and Bengals’ defensive coordinators jobs this offseason. However, he says he felt that Jacksonville was the right situation for him.

“I just felt it had to be the right situation, around people that you knew and felt good about working around,” Capers said. “I got a little bit of a feel for things and I developed a comfort level. Doug [Marrone, the Jaguars head coach] has been great.

“I enjoy looking at personnel and trying to see how you can feature different guys in your scheme. Hopefully, I’ll be able to look at some of the opponents and maybe formulate some ideas and share them with [Wash].”
