AFC Notes: Colts, Jaguars, Titans

Colts

Colts LB Darius Leonard says he’s really looking forward to playing with DT DeForest Buckner in the years to come.

“Having DeForest come onto the team and help our defense out, he’s a complete dog. Watching his tape, he has a motor that doesn’t stop,” Leonard said during an appearance on NFL Network. “You can not just focus on the linebackers, we got so many defensive linemen now that are gonna eat up on any offensive line that’s in front of us. I think that’s gonna allow the linebackers to run around, make more plays, take some stress off the defensive backs because they don’t have to stay in coverage so long.

“I’m definitely looking forward to him coming out here and, you know, bring that dog mentality that he’s had and help this defense win and be the number one defense in the NFL.”

Jaguars

  • Jacksonville.com’s John Reid points out Jaguars DE Yannick Ngakoue likely won’t make anything easy for the team as they work through their standoff.
  • Ngakoue still hasn’t signed his franchise tag, and while the two sides have until July 15 to work on a long-term deal, the defensive end has been resolute in his desire for a trade.
  • Reid says Ngakoue will either have to sign and play under the terms of the tender or sit out the 2020 season. The Jaguars meanwhile likely will have to take what they can get for Ngakoue at some point.

Titans

The Titans dealt with kicker issues for nearly the entire 2019 season. But bringing in K Greg Joseph for the final two regular-season games helped stabilize the position. Joseph didn’t attempt a field goal in the regular season but made all nine extra points. He was perfect on another nine PATs during the playoffs and made his only field-goal attempt โ€” a 30-yarder in the AFC title game. Heading into 2020, Joseph will be pushed by UDFA K Tucker McCann, but is the favorite to win the job.

“When the season ended, they just kind of conveyed the message: We love what you did here,” Joseph said via Jim Wyatt of the team website. “And I told them: I want to be the guy. This is where I want to be, and I am going to bust my butt all offseason to make that happen.

“The way I look at it, I am in a competition every year, and I just have to focus on myself to become the best kicker I can be. I want to put them in between the uprights on every kick and do everything I can to help the team. I want to be with the Titans, and I am going to work and do everything I can possibly do to make it happen. I am excited about what’s ahead and looking forward to the season.
