AFC Notes: Jared Verse, Deshaun Watson, Kyle Hamilton, Browns, Ravens

Browns

Browns EDGE rusher Jared Verse said the hardest thing about being traded was leaving his teammates.

When he gave me that news, my mindset wasn’t, ‘Oh my god, I’ve got to leave. I’ve got to pack up my house. I’ve got to go across the country.’ My mindset was, ‘I’ve got to leave my teammates, I’ve got to leave my brothers behind, because I don’t want to leave my brothers,’” he said, via Rams Wire. “So if I’m going to, I want to address them. I don’t want them to find out from ESPN or from this news site or that news site. I want them to hear it from me. Went to the team room, Coach, he released it, he told everybody that, ‘We’re trading Jared,’ and I got to tell everybody. I said, ‘It sucks I’m not going to be here. I love you guys to death. You guys are going to go out there, you guys are going to dominate, you guys are going to do everything you can do and you guys are going to play the best you can. You guys got 17 games for sure. Who knows what’s going to happen after that but just go dominate.’

Browns

Deshaun Watson goes into the offseason program competing for the Browns’ starting quarterback job. Cleveland HC Todd Monken mentions that Watson’s mobility will be a “huge weapon for him” this year.

“I think the things you don’t see out here — you do a little bit — I think (Watson) plays with his feet,” Monken said, via Mary Kay Cabot. That’s going to be a huge weapon for him. It has been in his career, and as long as he’s healthy, it will continue to be a weapon for him.”

Browns QBs coach Mike Bajakian said Watson “looks great physically” after recovering from a torn Achilles and has looked like a “high level athlete” throughout their offseason program thus far.

“Deshaun looks great physically,” Bajakian said. “I wasn’t around him prior to those injuries or at any point before. I’d seen him on video. I even went back, when I got here, evaluated some of his Houston video. What I’m seeing is a high, high level athlete on the field over the course of the last 12 practices. And so athletically, he looks great.”

Bajakian points out that Watson has played in many systems throughout his career and wants the quarterback to translate his experience into their operation.

“For (Watson), he’s been exposed to so much over his career,” Bajakian said. “He’s done things a lot of different ways. He’s been in a lot of different offenses. So the biggest thing for him was being able to translate what we’re doing to something he’s done in the past. And he’s an extremely fast processor, very smart guy. Again, been working his butt off. The amount of preparation he put in before we even were able to get our hands on him in Phase I, he came in and we started talking about schemes and concepts and techniques and he would refer back to the Baltimore video and refer to things that Lamar was doing.”

Ravens

Ravens S Kyle Hamilton has been one of the most versatile defenders in the league since being drafted, seeing time in the box, slot corner, outside linebacker, safety and even outside corner. Amidst an offseason with a new defensive scheme under HC Jesse Minter, Hamilton wants to focus on mastering certain skills rather than being good at multiple spots.

“I don’t want to be Jack of all trades, master of none, and I feel like I haven’t mastered anything right now,” Hamilton said, via the team’s website.

“I think it’s not a matter of doing a ton of different stuff — it’s just getting better at everything that I have been doing. I feel like I’ve got a long way to go to be where I feel like I can be as a player.”

Minter couldn’t say enough good things about Hamiton, praising the All-Pro’s understanding of the game above all else.

“Kyle is incredible. The things he’s able to do — I think he’s very, very unique. He’s a one-of-one player in this league with the things that he’s able to do and the things he’s able to be elite at,” Minter said.

“[He’s] such a joy to work with — the way he sees the game. He’s extremely smart. He’s extremely cerebral. He wants to understand why we’re doing things. He anticipates plays based on looks, formations and sets. It’s great to have a guy like that. He’s a guy that you could put him in one spot, and he could be the best in the league; put him in another spot, and he could be the best in the league.”
