AFC West Notes: Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs

Broncos

Broncos GM John Elway admitted that this season has “been tough” on first-year HC Vic Fangio but feels he is doing a “nice job.”

I think he’s done great. Obviously it’s been tough but it’s been tough on everybody. He’s been a pillar and done a nice job and stayed the course and kept working hard at it. I think he’s done a nice job. It’s been tough for him, though,” said Elway, via Mike Klis of 9News.

Regarding Broncos CB Bryce Callahan‘s foot injury, Elway said they will examine him one final time before deciding whether he will play this season.

It’s been frustrating for everybody including him. It’s one of those things. We’ll see how the last thing (shot) goes and see if he’ll get back this year or not,” said Elway, via Klis.

Chargers

Chiefs

Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke highly of Texans QB Deshaun Watson and said he stood out to them during the 2017 draft process.

He’s a great player,” said Reid, via Adam Teicher of ESPN. “What he did at Clemson was what we thought he would do here. We think he’s a tremendous football player. He’s got some good players there around him, and he’s utilizing them. As good of a player as he is, he’s even a better person. He’s a great kid. He was a real pleasure to deal with before the draft. With him, he’s one of those kids when you meet him, he’s got that ‘whatever’ about him that you really like.”

Reid explained that they felt Patrick Mahomes was the best fit for their system of the top quarterbacks in the 2017 draft.

We just thought, with what we do, that Mahomes would fit in well. We had all the guys in. All the quarterbacks came in. We had an opportunity to spend six hours with each guy, and that was a great experience to have a chance to meet all the guys. Both those young men are tremendous young men. We just thought, with what we do, Mahomes would fit in the best.
