AFC West Notes: Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs, Raiders

Broncos

  • According to James Palmer, Broncos GM John Elway has reached out to teams and had teams reach out to him about trading during the draft.
  • Palmer notes nothing in terms of compensation has come up yet that would make Elway consider moving.
  • Elways says he hasn’t considered trading CB Chris Harris, who has made it known he wants a new deal: “Haven’t even thought about that. … We’ll start talking with Chris after the draft.” (Mike Klis)
  • The Broncos plan to have four quarterbacks in training camp, which means they’ll add a veteran if they don’t draft a rookie. (Nicki Jhabvala)

Chargers

Chargers GM Tom Telesco said the team would love to pick up an extra pick even if it meant trading out of the first round, but he would want to make sure he still had a shot at a player the team loves.

“It would be the same with every draft: We’re always receptive to it,” Telesco said, via the team website. “We go through a lot of different scenarios as far as trading back, trading up and staying put. There’s never been a year where I’d ever say that we would definitely not trade up or definitely not trade back. We’d certainly be receptive to it. . . .If you did trade out of the first round, ideally you wouldn’t want to go too far back into the second round. A lot of that is dictated by what your board looks like at that point. A lot of those trades are going to happen on the clock, so we would know who’s available, who’s left. If we move back, how far could we go and try to make an estimation if we go back to a certain point, could we still get a player that we really like. It’s great to pick up extra picks, but also I want to make sure whoever we take with that first pick — whether it’s a first-round pick or we trade back into the second — it’s a player that we really, really love, not just a guy that we like but we got an extra draft pick to go along with it. I want a player that we really like, we’re all invested in — scouts, coaches, everybody in the building.”

The Chargers pick No. 28, but Telesco added the team doesn’t have 28 players with first-round grades on its board.

“I don’t think anybody would ever have 28 players rated as first-round players,” Telesco said. “I know we don’t. . . .It’s just different picking 28th rather than in the top 15, top 17. I don’t know what the expectations will be Year One. It may not be to come in and play like (S) Derwin James did. It’s pretty amazing what he did.”

Chiefs

  • According to Mike Garafolo, the trade and new deal for DE Frank Clark won’t stop the Chiefs from continuing to work on an extension for DT Chris Jones, which is expected to be in the neighborhood of $20 million per season.
  • Clark said it felt nice to be appreciated: “I feel like I’m good. I wanted to be somewhere where I’m wanted, where I’m appreciated. I thank God that KC came in & showed that…In life u just want to be shown that you are appreciated sometimes & I feel like this was one of those things.” (Josina Anderson)

Raiders

Raiders OT Kolton Miller said the knee injury he suffered in Week 4 of his rookie year is improving, but that his knee will never be the same.

“Toward the end of the season, that’s when I felt better, and I got used to it,” Miller said via the Athletic’s Vic Tafur. “I don’t think it’s ever going to be normal — you still feel a little bit of looseness — but it shouldn’t affect my game … A trainer said it’s kind of like working with spaghetti. (Laughs) They have compared people who have had surgery for it and people who haven’t and it ended up healing the same.”
