Amari Cooper Wants To Be A Cowboy For “A Long Time”

Cowboys WR Amari Cooper said he wants to be in Dallas for a long time.

“I really want to play well,” Cooper said via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “I think everything starts with that. If you play good football, you’re going to be around a long time. And I do want to be a Dallas Cowboy for a long time.”

Contract negotiations between Cooper and the Cowboys have reportedly stalled. Cooper could wait until Falcons WR Julio Jones and Saints WR Michael Thomas sign new contracts, as both are expected to reset the receiver market.

However, Cooper says he’s more focused on playing well and letting everything take care of itself.

“It really doesn’t matter to me, I’m not even really thinking about that,” he said. “I’m just more focused on how I play, how I approach the game, the type of work that I put in.”

Dallas has a number of key players in line for extensions including Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott, but that has not changed their confidence in retaining their core.

Cooper, 24, is a former No. 4 overall pick by the Raiders out of Alabama in the 2015 NFL Draft. The Raiders traded him to the Cowboys for a first-round pick midway through the 2018 season.

He is in the final year of his four-year, $22.7 million fully guaranteed rookie contract and is set to earn a base salary of $705,000 for 2018 to go along with a $2,825,426 roster bonus.

In 2018, Cooper appeared in 15 games, six for the Raiders and nine for the Cowboys. In total, he caught 75 passes for 1005 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.

We’ll have more regarding Cooper as the news is available.
