Amari Cooper Wants To Be In Dallas For “Long Time”

Amari Cooper tells Jane Slater of NFL Media that nothing is imminent with the Cowboys regarding a long-term extension at this point in time.

“I haven’t talked to my agent about my contract situation,” Cooper said. “We’ve talked about other things like Pro Bowl, things I have to do at the Super Bowl. I don’t want to rush it. I think it’s not something that’s imminent. So just taking it day by day.”

Cooper did, however, make it clear that he wants to remain in Dallas for “a long time.”

“I do [want to stay in Dallas],” Cooper said. “I mean that wholeheartedly. I love Dallas. . . .I feel like it’s home. I want to live there for a long time.

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones said recently that Cooper is their “No. 2″ priority behind only QB Dak Prescott this offseason, per Michael Gehlken.

The Cowboys clearly have a lot of work ahead of them and re-signing Cooper is going to require a large financial commitment, given that he would be the best available receiver in this year’s free agent market.

Dallas could have both the franchise and transition tags at their disposal this offseason if need be, depending on whether a new CBA is in place before the start of free agency.

Cooper, 25, is a former No. 4 overall pick by the Raiders out of Alabama in the 2015 NFL Draft. The Raiders traded him to the Cowboys for a first-round pick midway through the 2018 season.

Cooper played out the final year of his four-year, $22.7 million contract, but his fifth-year option was picked up in 2018. He’s in line to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

In 2019, Cooper appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and caught 79 passes for 1,189 yards receiving and eight touchdowns.

We have him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
