Browns Fire Hue Jackson

Update:

Here’s the statement from the Browns regarding the decision to fire HC Hue Jackson.

We greatly appreciate Hue’s commitment to the Cleveland Browns organization over the last two and a half years,” Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam said in a statement. “We understand how critical this time period is in the development of our football team, individually and collectively, and believed it was in the organization’s best interest to make the move at this time, in order to maximize our opportunities the rest of this season. We certainly only wish Hue, Michelle, and his family the best moving forward.”

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Browns have hired HC Hue Jackson on Monday.

  • Ian Rapoport report that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam sounded like he wanted to keep Jackson while GM John Dorsey preferred to move on.
  • According to Schefter, Jackson’s contract runs through 2019, which means the Browns will be contractually obligated to him through next year.

Reports from Sunday mentioned that changes were likely coming to the Browns this week and it looks like the team ultimately decided it was best to move on from Jackson.

It will be interesting to see who the Browns promote to interim head coach, as they could go with Todd Haley or Gregg Williams.

Jackson, 53, began his NFL coaching career back in 2001 as the Redskins RBs coach. He worked for the Bengals, Falcons and Ravens before he was hired by the Raiders as their offensive coordinator in 2010.

Jackson was later promoted to head coach but lasted one season at the helm. After four years with the Bengals, Jackson was hired as the Browns head coach in 2016.

During his time as the Browns’ head coach, Jackson led them to a record of 3-36-1 (8.8 percent) and no playoff appearances.
