Browns Officially Trade RB Carlos Hyde To Jaguars For 2019 Fifth-Round Pick

Update:

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ trade for Browns RB Carlos Hyde became official on Saturday after he passed his physical for his new team.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Browns are trading RB Carlos Hyde to the Jaguars.

  • Tom Pelissero reports that the Browns receive a 2019 fifth-round pick from the Jaguars in return for Hyde.
  • Mike Silver reports that the Jaguars’ decision to trade for Hyde stemmed from “mounting frustration” inside the building — particularly among coaches — about Fournette’s prolonged absence. Silver says that Jacksonville built their offense around him, but his hamstring issue continues to linger.

This is an interesting trade for both teams, as it officially opens the door for rookie RB Nick Chubb to take over as the team’s starting running back. Duke Johnson should also see an expanded role with Hyde no longer part of their rotations.

The Jaguars have been without Leonard Fournette the past few weeks while he works his way back from a hamstring injury, but their running back depth overall isn’t very good.

It’s worth mentioning that Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon will be an unrestricted free agent in 2019, so this deal gives them a solid No. 2 option in the coming years.

Hyde, 28, is a former second-round pick of the 49ers back in 2014. He played out the final year of his four-year, $3.681 million contract before agreeing to a three-year contract worth $15 million with the Browns this pats March.

Hyde stands to make base salaries of $1,500,000 and $3,250,000 over the next two years of the agreement.

In 2018, Hyde has appeared in six games for the Browns and rushed for 382 yards on 114 carries (3.4 YPC) to go along with six receptions for 29 yards receiving and five touchdowns.

  1. Are the Browns idiots or just plain stupid? They aren’t talented enough to give up Hyde this early in the season. The trio of Hyde-Chubb-Duke is what they need; and to give up one of them for a 5th round pick next draft is simply dumb. Good teams have balance and depth and that trio of back fortifies the Browns but could change immediately if one of them should get dinged up like most running backs do during the course of the season. But, this is a typical Cleveland Browns move.

    • No way. Crowded RB committees can hurt a team as much as it can help them. The Browns have a RB that has potential to be a fantastic 3 down back with Nick Chubb, give him the ball and let him grow. It also opens up a focus for Duke Johnson to continue being the receiving threat that he was last year. Smart move on Cleveland’s part.

      • Nick chubb is not a 3 down running back. I like him but his blocking has horrible thus far. I think this move opens up 1st and 2nd down for chubb and 3rd down for Duke Johnson.
