Buccaneers Fire HC Dirk Koetter

Adam Schefter reports that the Buccaneers have informed HC Dirk Koetter that he’s being relieved of his duties.

Buccaneers chairman Joel Glazer has already confirmed the news:

“We sincerely appreciate the hard work and commitment shown by Dirk over the past several years. Working with Dirk has been a pleasure and we wish him and his family all the best in the future. Our search for a new head coach will begin immediately and will be conducted by General Manager Jason Licht.”

All indications have been that Koetter was going to be replaced after the season, so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

The Buccaneers have been linked to former Packers HC Mike McCarthy and some reports have said that they may aim high with their next hire. Although, it remains to be seen how attractive the job will be.

Koetter, 59, began his NFL coaching career as the Jaguars’ offensive coordinator back in 2007. After five years in Jacksonville, he was hired as the Falcons’ offensive coordinator and later joined Lovie Smith’s staff in the same role for the 2015 season.

The Buccaneers elected to move on from Smith after one season and made the decision to elevate Koetter to head coach.

During his three years as the Buccaneers’ head coach, Koetter led the team to a record of 19-29 (38.77 percent) and no playoff appearances.
