Cowboys Officially Parting Ways With Jason Garrett

Update:

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones issued the following statement on the decision to move on from Jason Garrett:

“We are extremely grateful to Jason Garrett for his more than 20 years of service to the Dallas Cowboys as a player, assistant coach and head coach. His level of commitment, character and dedication to this organization has been outstanding at every stage of his career. In his nine full years as a head coach, he guided our team to three division championships while also having them in position to play for the NFC East title in the last game of the year in four other seasons. His tenure of leadership will be characterized by his ability to produce teams that always played with great effort, emotion and passion, and he represented our organization with great pride, loyalty and respect.

“Jason Garrett’s legacy with the Dallas Cowboys will always be that of someone who strived for greatness every day that he walked through the door, and as someone who instilled the virtues of enthusiasm, hard work and appreciation for the profession in all of the men who played with him and for him.

“He is, and always will remain, a cherished member of the Dallas Cowboys family, and his contributions to the organization are greatly appreciated.”

The Dallas Cowboys have informed Jason Garrett’s that he’s officially out as the team’s head coach, according to Jay Glazer.

This was the expectation all along and shouldn’t come as a big surprise, especially after the Cowboys were unable to make the playoffs this year.

Recent reports had said that Garrett had been lobbying for the Cowboys to retain him as head coach, even though it was clear they were planning to move on.

Dallas has already interviewed Mike McCarthy and Marvin Lewis for their head-coaching job and you can expect more names to be added to that list in the coming days.

Garrett, 53, began his NFL coaching career with the Dolphins back in 2005 as their quarterbacks coach. After two years in Miami, the Cowboys hired him as their offensive coordinator and he eventually worked his way up to head coach.

Garrett’s contract was set to expire in the coming days, so he won’t be officially fired.

Over the course of his 10 years in charge of the Cowboys, Garrett led the team to a record of 85-67 (55.3 percent), which includes three playoff appearances.
