Buccaneers Could Once Again Be Active In Free Agency

Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune reports that the Buccaneers have restructured the contracts of WR Vincent Jackson and G Carl Nicks to create some additional cap space.

Both Jackson and Nicks agreed to turn majority of their 2013 base salaries into bonuses that will be prorated over the remaining four seasons of their respective contracts. This leaves Tampa Bay with $30.1 million in cap space to work with this offseason.

That has actually opened a lot of cap room for us going into 2013 – a tremendous amount,” Bucs general manager Mark Dominik said. “We’ve got a chance to be (heavily) involved in free agency again.”

Last year, the Bucs signed Jackson, Nicks and CB Eric Wright to sizable contracts, but the team is expected to release Wright after he was suspended for four games for PEDs.

The Buccaneers figure to use a portion of that money to address the DE Michael Bennett who is set to become an unrestricted free agent next month. There has also been talk of a contract extension in the works for WR Mike Williams.

Some areas of need for the Bucs would include: tight end, another running back, cornerback, inside linebacker and some additional depth for their defensive line.
