Greg Auman reports that the Buccaneers did not actually create any cap space with the move they made with Mike Evans‘ contract, despite the prior report.
Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Buccaneers recently converted $3 million of WR Mike Evans’ $20 million base salary for the 2019 season into a roster bonus and in turn created $2.4 million of cap space.
Tampa’s cap situation is about as tight as any in the NFL, this is needed breathing room.
The Buccaneers had the lowest amount of cap room at just $2,744,199 before this move, according to OverTheCap.com, so this will give them some extra room to work with moving forward.
Evans, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Buccaneers back in 2014. He was in the final year of his four-year, $14.631 million and set to make a base salary of $690,000 for the 2017 season when he agreed to a five-year, $82.5 million extension that includes $55 million guaranteed last year.
Evans stands to make base salaries of $20 million (2019), $16.75 million (2020), $12.25 million (2021), $14 million (2022) and $13 million (2023) over the remainder of the agreement.
In 2018, Evans appeared in all 16 games for the Buccaneers and caught 86 passes for 1,524 yards receiving and eight touchdowns.
