Cardinals Have Had “Initial” Extension Talks With CB Patrick Peterson

Cardinals GM Steve Keim said in an interview with Arizona Sports 98.7 on Friday that they’ve had initial contract extension talks with CB Patrick Peterson.

“When you look at the body of work last year, he’d be the first to tell you he didn’t play up to expectations,” Keim said, via AzCardinals.com. “The last three games he played excellent, the way we expected him to play. I think he’s got a chip on his shoulder and I think he’s going to come back with a vengeance.”

Last year, Peterson came up as a potential trade candidate for the Cardinals. In fact, he requested a trade out of Arizona at one point before later walking back his demands.

While teams reportedly reached out to the Cardinals about potential trades for Peterson last year, Arizona ultimately held on to him and rebuffed trade interest.

Peterson served a six-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy last year.

Peterson, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2011. He’s currently in the fifth year of his seven-year, $83.02 million that included $48 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $11 million for the 2020 season.

Peterson would be an unrestricted free agent in 2021.

In 2019, Peterson appeared in 10 games for the Cardinals and recorded 53 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and seven passes defended.

We’ll have more regarding the Cardinals and Peterson as the news is available.
