Cardinals Second-Round Pick TE Troy Niklas Breaks Hand

Cardinals HC Bruce Arians told reporters on Tuesday that second-round pick TE Troy Niklas got his hand caught in a jersey last week and suffered a broken hand, via Darren Urban.

  • Arians added that Niklas is expected to be back in time for the start of training camp.

Niklas seems like a great fit in Arians’ offensive system which requires tight ends to be blockers first. At Notre Dame, Niklas excelled as a blocking tight end and was widely considered to be the best blocker among this year’s crop of tight ends.

During his three years at Notre Dame, Niklas caught 37 passes for 573 yards receiving and scored six touchdowns over the course of 38 games.

The Cardinals really needed some depth at tight end as Rob Housler has been a disappointment and free agent acquisition John Carlson has dealt with numerous injuries, so I’m sure he’ll have an opportunity to carve out at least a part-time role in training camp.
