Chargers TE Asante Cleveland Goes Unclaimed, Reverts To I.R.

The Los Angeles Chargers officially placed TE Asante Cleveland on injured reserve after passing through waivers unclaimed on Tuesday.

Cleveland, 24, originally signed on with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Miami (FL) back in May of last year. He spent a good majority of last year on the team’s practice squad.

The Patriots traded for him in August, but he was, unfortunately, unable to make the team’s 53-man roster coming out of the preseason. New England later signed him to their practice squad before cutting him loose midseason.

The Chargers wound up claiming him off of waivers only to cut him loose coming out of the preseason. Cleveland returned to the Chargers on a one-year, exclusive rights deal this offseason. Unfortunately, he was waived with an injury designation on Monday.

In 2016, Cleveland was active for just four games, but did not record a single reception.
