Chiefs In Ongoing Extension Talks With DT Chris Jones

According to the Kansas City Star’s Brooke Pryor, the Chiefs have begun extension talks with DT Chris Jones.

Jones is set to become a free agent in 2020, but the Chiefs would like to sign him to an extension before then.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach says they’ve had two or three conversations to start the process.

“There’s a lot of time to go before the season starts, and he’s certainly a guy that we’ve targeted and would love to get done,” Veach said. “The conversations have started.  I wouldn’t say they are heating up at a rapid pace, but you’ve got to start somewhere. We’ve had two to three of these conversations and they’re getting better.”

After moving on from LBs Dee Ford and Justin Houston and S Eric Berry, Jones will be counted on to be one of the leaders of the defense.

Jones, 24, is a former second-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2016. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $6.231 million contract and set to make base salaries of $916,476 and $1.19 million over the final two years of the agreement.

In 2018, Jones appeared in all 16 games for the Chiefs and recorded 40 tackles, 15.5 sacks, an interception returned for a touchdown, two forced fumbles and five pass defenses.
