Colorado Expected To Reach Out To Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy About HC Vacancy

Update:

Mike Klis reports that the University of Colorado has reached out to Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy about their head-coaching job as expected.

According to Klis, there’s “preliminary mutual interest” between the two parties.

Klis says interim HC Darrin Chiaverini is also a top candidate for the job.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the University of Colorado is expected to reach out Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy about their head-coaching vacancy now that Mel Tucker has departed for the Michigan State job.

Bieniemy is a former alum and happens to be Colorado’s all-time leading rusher.

However, Rapoport says it’s still “hard to imagine” him taking the Colorado job, given that he’s coming off of a Super Bowl with the Chiefs and should be a top head-coaching candidate next year.

Beyond that, it would be a tough situation to walk into, consider the impact on recruiting and hiring a staff at this late in the offseason would be very difficult.

Bieniemy, 50, played 10 seasons in the NFL for the Chargers, Bengals and Eagles before retiring in 1999. His NFL coaching career began in 2006 when he took over as the Vikings’ RBs coach.

The Chiefs hired him for the same position in 2013 and he was later promoted to offensive coordinator last year.

In 2019, the Chiefs’ offense ranked No. 6 in total yards, No. 5 in total points, No. 23 in rushing yards and No. 5 in passing yards.
