Cowboys Considering Franchising OLB Anthony Spencer?

Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Star Telegram reports that LB Anthony Spencer is a candidate for the Dallas Cowboys franchise tag.

Hill Jr mentions that Spencer was as productive of player as anyone on the team’s defense not named DeMarcus Ware.

“He is solid against against the run as he was fourth on the Cowboys with 74 tackles in 2011, writes Hill. He also led in forced fumbles with four and tied for the team lead in tackles for losses with eightAnd getting back to the pass rush, Spencer did have 31 quarterback pressures, second behind Ware’s 40.”

While the Cowboys may want a better pass rusher opposite of Ware, they’re most likely not going to find it on the open market market this year which is why they should consider keeping Spencer for another season. He’ll be the best true outside linebacker available this season which means that there will be more than enough competition for him. We have Spencer listed as the #25 best available free agent in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
