Cowboys Nearly Signed Dak Prescott To $33M Deal

According to Clarence Hill, the Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott nearly agreed to an extension worth $33 million a year back in September.

However, Hill says talks broke down after Prescott’s hot start to the season, with the quarterback presumably looking to top Seahawks QB Russell Wilson‘s $35 million a year as the NFL’s highest-paid player. The Cowboys haven’t had any substantive negotiations since.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has consistently maintained the team wants to sign Prescott to a long-term deal to keep him in Dallas as their franchise quarterback.

“He deserves everything he has coming,” Jones said. “We got real, real, real close there to start the season and just didn’t get it finished up. He’s so laser-focused on wanting to win football games and compete that he really didn’t want the distraction once we didn’t get it done in that first week of going back and forth with the contract. We just got to move forward. He’s our quarterback of the future. I’ll take him any time when you go to war against these guys. We’re fortunate to have him.”‬

Prescott, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2016. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $2.72 million contract and set to make a base salary of $720,000 for the 2019 season.

In 2019, Prescott appeared in all 16 games and completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 4,902 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He has also rushed for 277 yards and three touchdowns for Dallas. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 10 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.
