Cowboys Notes: Dak Prescott, Travis Frederick, Jason Garrett

Dak Prescott

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones mentioned that the team won’t balk on signing QB Dak Prescott to a long-term deal.

“We’re sold on Dak, and we do want to have him for the long term,” Jones said via Pro Football Talk. “We think he’s worthy of investing in for the long term. . . .We see real upside in Dak. You don’t have it all yet.”

Travis Frederick

So far Cowboys C Travis Frederick‘s return to football after missing 2018 due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome is going well.

“It’s been great. He’s done so well,” HC Jason Garrett said via Rob Phillips of the official team site. “We talked about this a lot last year when he was out last year and not able to play, just the impact that he had, the leadership that he demonstrated, not only with the offensive line but with the offense and with our whole team. He just did a fantastic job. And towards the end of the year he started feeling better and better.

“He’s been able to go through our entire offseason program up to this point. He was on the field with the guys last week. It was good to see him out there in a stance, running football plays. He looks really good. He’s an outstanding player and an outstanding person for us. He’s been a great leader for us. Excited to get him back.”

Jason Garrett

Cowboys HC Jason Garrett says he hasn’t talked about new contracts with any of his players who are up for new deals.

“The business of football always exists,” Garrett said via Pro Football Talk. “It is professional football, and that’s always a part of it. The best teams I’ve been around are ones where players are able to say, ‘I need to focus on this; I need to focus on football, playing my best, and all of that stuff will take care of itself.’ We have a team made up of the right kind of guys. We spent a lot of time trying to build this team the right way, bringing the right kind of people to our organization, and they handle those situations really, really well. Their involvement in the offseason program has been off the charts. The leadership from all levels of our team. . . Typically, you talk about leaders being more veteran players, but we have a lot of young players on our team who have stepped into leadership roles and done a fantastic job and have set the pace for everybody. So that’s really where our focus is. The business side will take care of itself.”

  • Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said HC Jason Garrett would likely coach out the final year of his deal in 2019: “I’m satisfied with where we are with his contract right now. It is to be negotiated at some point in the future. We all know that we need to get out here and win ball games.” (Jon Machota)
