Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper Top Priorities For Cowboys This Offseason

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones said the Cowboys’ No. 1 priority is an extension for QB Dak Prescott, with a new deal for WR Amari Cooper “No. 2,” per Michael Gehlken.

“It’s been urgent for us,” Jones said. “We certainly want to get that done. That’s our No. 1 priority as we go into the offseason is to …hopefully find some resolution to it and get that done.”

Prescott and Cooper are both finishing the final year of their deals and are slated to be free agents in 2020. Dallas could use both the franchise tag and transition tag right now, but if a new CBA is agreed to it would limit Dallas to one.

Neither have made much progress on negotiations this year. Prescott reportedly came close to signing a $33 million per year deal back in September, but his hot start to the season raised the price.

Dallas has maintained its desire to sign both, particularly after trading a first-round pick to acquire Cooper from the Raiders.

Prescott, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2016. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $2.72 million contract and set to make a base salary of $720,000 for the 2019 season.

In 2019, Prescott appeared in all 16 games and completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 4,902 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He has also rushed for 277 yards and three touchdowns for Dallas. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 10 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.

Cooper, 25, is a former No. 4 overall pick by the Raiders out of Alabama in the 2015 NFL Draft. The Raiders traded him to the Cowboys for a first-round pick midway through the 2018 season.

Cooper played out the final year of his four-year, $22.7 million contract, but his fifth-year option was picked up in 2018. He’s in line to be an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

In 2019, Cooper appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and caught 79 passes for 1,189 yards receiving and eight touchdowns.
