Eagles Release Veteran G Evan Mathis

The Philadelphia Eagles released veteran G Evan Mathis on Thursday.

Trade rumors have persisted for a few months now that Mathis could be dealt, but there has been very little traction towards a deal since reports first mentioned that the Eagles had made him available.

The Dolphins were mentioned as being a team to watch for Mathis, so we’ll have to see if they pursue him as a free agent.

Mathis is by far the best available free agent and should have a solid market for his services in the coming days.

Mathis, 33, had another two years remaining on his five-year, $25 million contract that included $7 million guaranteed. He would have made $5.5 million in 2015 and another $6 million in 2016.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Mathis would free up $4.5 million in available cap space while creating $2 million in dead money.

Last year, Mathis appeared in nine games for the Eagles after he dealt with an MCL injury. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2 guard out of 78 qualifying players.
