Former 49ers Owner Eddie DeBartolo Interested In Purchasing Panthers

Jim Trotter of ESPN reports that former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo is exploring the possibility of putting together a group to purchase the Panthers.

However, Trotter says that DeBartolo will have competition from other potential buyers if he seriously pursues the team.

DeBartolo released the following statement to Rick Stroud regarding his reported interest in the Panthers:

“I am going to respect Jerry Richardson’s wish to not discuss the sale of the Carolina Panthers until after their season is over.

Earlier in the day, Adam Schefter reported that the Panthers are expected to sell for around $2.5 billion. Current owner Jerry Richardson originally purchased the franchise $206 million back in 1993, so he stands to make a considerable profit from his investment in the franchise.

On Sunday, Richardson announced that he plans to sell the franchise (NFLTR) following the sexual and racial misconduct allegations made against him that prompted an investigation.

Panthers announced Monday that Tina Becker has been named Chief Operating Officer with full control of the day-to-day management of the organization.

DeBartolo, 71, purchased the 49ers back in 1977 and owned the team through the 2000 season before ceding control of the franchise to his sister, Denise York. During his tenure with the 49ers, the team won five Super Bowls and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year.

We’ll have more regarding the Panthers’ sale as the news is available.
