Former Cowboys TE Rico Gathers Goes Unclaimed, Now Free Agent

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that former Cowboys TE Rico Gathers went unclaimed on Wednesday, which means he’s now a free agent.

Gathers is suspended for the first game of the 2019 season.

Gathers, 25, is a former sixth-round pick of the Cowboys back in May of 2016. He was, unfortunately, cut loose coming out of the preseason and later signed to the team’s practice squad at the start of the regular season.

Dallas brought Gathers back on a future/reserve contract in 2017 but was placed on injured reserve after sustaining a concussion during the preseason. Gathers was in line to be a restricted free agent in 2020.

In 2018, Gathers appeared in 15 games for the Cowboys and caught three passes for 45 yards receiving and no touchdowns.
