Giants Keeping Osi Umenyiora?

Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger reports that the New York Giants have rescinded DE Osi Umenyiora’s permission to seek a trade out of New York. Garafolo’s source mentioned that the Giants have made the decision because Umenyiora’s agent Tony Agnone has not been able to find a team willing to give up a first-round pick in return for him.

Last night it was reported that the asking price had been lowered which surely would have increased interest amongst NFL teams. Apparently Giants were not willing to part with Umenyiora unless someone offered a godfather deal.

The Baltimore Sun reports that a  league source has informed that the New York Giants have lowered their asking price of a first-rounder to second-round pick in return for DE Osi Umenyiora.

The source says that there are five teams considering making a move for Umenyiora which includes that Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots. Those within the Ravens front office have encouraged GM Ozzie Newsome to pull the trigger on the deal but he has some concerns about some of the injuries that Umenyiora has dealt with in recent years.

Both New England and Baltimore are in need of a solid pass rusher and Umenyiora is by far the best available option. Considering the draft picks that the Patriots have lined up for next season it would make sense for the take a chance on filling their biggest need.

Umenyiora’s agent Tony Agnone told Paul Schwartz of the New York Post that “it’s not going to be long now,” in regards to the window for trading his client.

Schwartz said that he’s spoken with 21 teams about a possible deal.

Just trying to convince them to give up that elusive first-round pick,’’ Agnone said.  “Still working on it.’’

ESPN’s John Clayton speculates that there’s a chance that the Seahawks could offer TE John Carlson and a draft pick to the Giants in return for DE Osi Umenyiora.

This is just speculation as of now but the Seahawks do have interest in Umenyiora and the Giants need a tight end. The deal would like have to include a second or third-round draft pick considering that they could always re-sign Kevin Boss who’s currently available.

Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that there are five teams that are interested in DE Osi Umenyiora. His sources informed him that the Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, Seattle Seahawks and St. Louis Rams who have either expressed interest to Umenyiora himself or his agent.

The only issue that still remains is the New York Giants asking price of a first-round pick. Any team that trades for Umenyiora will have to willing to give him a lucrative contract on top of the first-round pick that they’ll be sending to the Giants which makes it a very costly move to consider.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that teams are not very enticed be the asking price so far.

The more people around the league talk, the more obvious is it the Giants will not get back a first-round pick for Osi Umenyiora. Next move.”

Unless the Giants come down in their asking price, Umenyiora will most likely be staying put whether he wants to or not. You really get the impression that the Giants do not want to part with Osi so they choose to appease his wishes but set the asking high enough to limit interest from other teams.
