Holdout Still Possible For Odell Beckham Jr?

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.com mentions that while Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr has promised to not hold out for a new contract during training camp, team sources have said that they’re not so sure about that.

Beckham is clearly looking for a long-term extension from the Giants, but Vacchiano says that there’s no indication he’ll get one any time soon.

Last week, Beckham said he would not hold out of training camp for a new contract.

“Yes sir. Yes you will,” said Beckham when asked if he will attend training camp, via Ralph Vacchiano. “No. No holdout.”

A person familiar with Beckham’s plans previously told Vacchiano that this is, in fact, the plan. However, Vacchiano’s source also cautioned that those plans could change if there’s no movement in contract talks.

The Giants have said publicly that they’re open to signing Beckham to a long-term extension, but Vacchiano mentions that they’ve apparently shown no sign of being willing to come close to meeting his financial demands.

Beckham Jr. was in attendance for the start of the Giants’ voluntary offseason conditioning program without a contract extension, but missed the final few days.

It will be interesting to see the Giants and Beckham get seriously involved in long-term extension talks this summer, given that he did not miss voluntary workouts and will attend training camp.

The Giants will have the franchise tag at their disposal next year if they can’t get a deal done before then.

Beckham, 25, was taken with the No. 12 overall pick by the Giants back in 2014. He played out the final year of his four-year, $10,406,198 contract but the Giants picked up his fifth-year option last year.

Beckham stands to make a base salary of $8,459,000 for the 2018 season before becoming an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career next year.

In 2017, Beckham Jr’s season was cut short when he suffered a season-ending injury. He caught 25 passes for 302 yards receiving and three touchdowns over the course of four games.

We have him featured in our Top 25 – 2019 NFL Free Agents list.
