Dianna Russini reports that free agent DE/OLB Jadeveon Clowney is looking for $20 million per year in negotiations with interested teams.
However, Russini says teams aren’t willing to go that high, considering that most of the top pass rushers were franchised at much lower salaries between $15-17 million per year depending on whether they’re considered defensive ends or linebackers for the tag.
Mike Garafolo mentioned earlier in the week that Clowney has not found the market he expected so far during free agency the offer the Seahawks have on the table could end up being his best option.
Clowney has reportedly been looking for an average annual salary of $21 million which would put him in the same tier as the elite pass rushers in the NFL.
While the Jets and Giants have been in contact with the star pass rusher during the early negotiating period, it sounds like a return to Seattle could prove to be his best option in the end. Injuries have been a concern for Clowney so far during his career.
Clowney, 27, is a former No. 1 overall pick of the Texans back in 2014. He was in the final year of his four-year, $22.272 million contract when the Texans picked up his fifth-year option which paid him $12.306 million for the 2018 season.
Houston franchised Clowney last year before trading him to the Seahawks at the start of the regular season.
In 2019, Clowney appeared in 13 games for the Seahawks and recorded 31 tackles, three sacks, an interception, two defensive touchdowns, four forced fumbles, two recoveries and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2o edge rusher out of 108 qualifying players.
