Jaguars owner Shad Khan tells Mark Long of the Associated Press that they have no plans to trade away CB Jalen Ramsey, despite the trade request he made a few weeks ago.
โObviously, football is a team sport, and Iโm sensitive to what individual insight or viewpoint or requests [there] might be,โ Khan said. โBut we have to do the right thing for the team. We value the values Jalen adds to us, to the Jaguars. I think we value him highly. Weโre still looking at what is the right thing for the Jaguars, and I think right now the best thing is to have him be part of the team.โ
Khan says he’s met with Ramsey and believes they have a “pretty good” relationship.
โIโve met with him,โ Khan said. โI think my relationship with him is pretty good. This is not a request from me or a viewpoint from me. I have no issue, obviously. Iโd love for him to be part of the Jaguars.โ
Jacksonville has managed to mitigate the loss of starting quarterback Nick Foles to a shoulder injury and Khan believes Ramsey can help them turn things around further.
โObviously, weโre turning the season around and I think he can help the team,โ Khan said.
Chris Mortensen said in a recent ESPN Radio interview that there are four teams still “highly highly interested” in pursuing a trade for Ramsey including the Eagles, Chiefs, Ravens and Chargers.
Mortensen adds it’s easy to call the Eagles the frontrunners for Ramsey given their injuries in the secondary, while the Ravens and Chiefs are two other “obvious” candidates.
Jacksonville reportedly turned down an offer of two first-round picks from a team, which had previously been their asking price for Ramsey.
Mortensen says Khan is willing to pay Ramsey when his contract is up in two years and doesn’t want to set a precedent of players being able to force their way out.
While there has been some recent buzz about the Jaguars hoping to keep Ramsey and sign him to an extension, there’s a “strong sense” around the NFL an extension is not in the cards and a trade is inevitable.
Ramsey, 24, is a former first-round pick of the Jaguars back in 2016. He signed a four-year, $23.35 million contract and is set to make a base salary of $3.63 million in 2019.
The Jaguars picked up Ramsey’ fifth-year option that will cost them around $13 million for the 2020 season and will become fully guaranteed on the first day of 2020 league year.
In 2019, Ramsey has appeared in three games for the Jaguars and recorded 18 tackles, a forced fumble and one pass defense.
We’ll have more regarding Ramsey as the news is available.
