Josh McDaniels Interested In 49ers’ HC Job, But Reportedly Conflicted About It Right Now

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a league source, reports that Patriots OC Josh McDaniels is trying to ensure the next head-coaching job he takes works out much better than his tenure with the Broncos did years ago.

According to Florio, McDaniels is considered the top candidate for the 49ers’ head-coaching job and some league sources believe he wants the position. In fact, McDaniels has reportedly been reaching out to potential assistant coaches and urging them to remain available should he accept the 49ers’ job.

However, Florio has spoken to other sources who believe McDaniels is conflicted about accepting the position. One concern for McDaniels, according to Florio, could be uprooting his family for a what could be a short-term stint on the West Coast. Florio points out that McDaniels last less than two years with the Broncos and there’s some concern that even if the 49ers make him promises to commit to a patient rebuild, it could still be a brief stint.

In regards to other candidates, Florio mentions that Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan is still believed to be a top candidate while Seahawks OL coach Tom Cable could emerge as a dark horse for San Francisco, particularly if the elect to hire one of the two Seahawks executives Trent Kirchner and Scott Fitterer, who interviewed for their GM vacancy.

The one aspect that helps Cable is the fact that he’s available to be hired right now while the 49ers would have to wait until the Falcons or Patriots are eliminated from contention to hire the other two.

We’ll have more regarding the 49ers’ job as the news is available.
