Lions HC Jim Caldwell announced Monday that rookie RBย Zach Zenner will placed on season-ending injured reserve after he sustainedย multiple cracked ribs andย partially collapsed lung during Sunday’s game.
Losing Zenner leaves the Lions with running backsย Joique Bell, rookie Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddickย to go along with George Winn, who’s on their practice squad.
Zenner, 24, signed on with the Lions as an undrafted free agent out of South Dakota State back in May. He was a preseasonย standout for the Lions, which led to him making theย 53-man rosterย at the start of the regular season.
Zenner signed a three-year, $1.58 million contractย thatย included a $5,000 signing bonus. He’ll make base salaries of $435,000 (2015), $525,000 (2016), andย $615,000 (2017) over the remainder of the contract before becoming a restricted free agent in 2018.
His rookie season ends with him appearing in six games and rushing for 60 yards on 17 carries (3.5 YPC) to go along with two receptions for 11 yards receiving and no touchdowns.
