Lions Sign Three Draft Picks Including First-Round TE T.J. Hockenson

The Detroit Lions announced Thursday that they’ve signed three draft picks including first-round TE T.J. Hockenson, second-round LB Jahlani Tavai and fifth-round CB Amani Oruwariye.

Hockenson, 21, was selected by the Lions with the No. 8 overall pick and was considered the best available tight end in the 2019 NFL Draft. 

According to OverTheCap.com, Hockenson receives a four-year, $19,821,230 rookie contract that includes $12,435,440 signing bonus. 

During his college career at Iowa, Hockenson recorded 73 receptions for 1,080 yards receiving (14.8 YPC) and nine touchdowns to go along with one rushing attempt for four yards and one touchdown. 

Tavai, 22, was the No. 43 overall pick by the Lions out of Hawaii. He received an honorable mention for All-Mountain West last season and was named the team’s defensive MVP for the second consecutive year. 

According to OverTheCap.com, Tavai receives a four-year, $6,893,964 rookie contract including a $3,033,792 signing bonus. 

Lance Zierlein compares him to Colts LB Anthony Walker.

During his four-year college career at Hawaii, Tavai recorded 390 total tackles, 41 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, two interceptions, five pass defenses, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries.
