NFC North Notes: Bears, Lions, Packers

Bears

Lions

The Lions made OL Halapoulivaati Vaitai one of their top targets, locking down the former Eagles utility lineman in the first wave of free agency with a five-year deal worth up to $50 million. Vaitai’s flexibility was a big selling point. With RG Graham Glasgow and RT Ricky Wagner departing this offseason, Lions GM Bob Quinn said Vaitai’s experience at both guard and tackle gives Detroit flexibility in the draft to fill out the starting right side of their line.

“Obviously, he has more experience at tackle. This guy played left tackle in the Super Bowl. He’s played a bunch of games at tackle behind two outstanding tackles at the Eagles,” Quinn said via Tim Twentyman of the team website. “So, he has versatility to play both. We’ll kind of see where the roster shakes up here in another three, four weeks and kind of solidify the depth chart going into the offseason.”

  • Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer says he’s heard rumblings the Lions have taken a liking to Auburn DT Derrick Brown in addition to Ohio State CB Jeffrey Okudah at No. 3 overall.
  • In the absence of spring workouts on the field, Quinn said the Lions plan to sign just “a handful” of undrafted free agents, as they’ll have less of a chance to make the roster. (Benjamin Raven)

Packers

  • Packers GM Brian Gutekunst told reporters on Monday that they would like to move around in the draft this week: “I’d like to move around. I think it’s a very good draft. I’d like to move around and get to the areas of the draft that are strong.” (Matt Schneidman)
  • Gutekunst was asked if he wants to re-sign veteran CB Tramon Williams: “We’re going to kind of wait until after the draft to see where we’re at.” Gutekunst did refer to Williams as “an all-time Packer.” (Ryan Wood)
  • NBC Sports’ Peter King lists the Packers as a potential landing spot for Utah State QB Jordan Love at No. 62 overall.
