NFC Notes: 49ers, Lions, Saints

49ers

  • According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, the 49ers interviewed former Dolphins DB coach Tony Oden to replace Joe Woods, who departed for the Browns’ DC job.
  • Ian Rapoport of NFL Network also mentioned that another option could be former Cowboys defensive backs coach Kris Richard
  • Alex Marvez of Sirius XM NFL reports that the 49ers have hired Bills assistant defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton for the same position.

Lions

  • According to Joel Corry of CBS Sports, Lions punter Sam Martin‘s contract officially voids on Friday, making him an unrestricted free agent in March. Corry says the Lions will have a $500,000 cap charge due to Martin’s prorated bonus for this contract year.

Saints

Saints HC Sean Payton said Drew Brees‘ decision will come down to whether he wants to continue playing, but it’s not a money related situation.

“Look, the season ended and, like we’ve done every year, spent some time; Drew [Brees] and I would talk. He was getting ready to go to the Pro Bowl and we spent some time, no different this year. And I know he’s given a lot of thought to what he wants to do here moving forward. I totally see him spending some time with his family making this decision. I don’t think there’s anything more to it than just his decision as to playing another year or not. It’s not money-related, it’s not another team related, and I think he went out of his way to make sure everyone saw that as well.  Our communication has been fantastic throughout,” said Payton, via SiriusXM NFL Radio
