Bears

New Bears GM Ryan Poles had his heart set on what he viewed as a huge addition โ€” a major multi-year deal for DT Larry Ogunjobi. However, a physical revealed an issue with Ogunjobi’s foot that was serious enough that Poles felt he had to back out of the deal, much to his regret.

โ€œThat hurt me. It really did,โ€ he said via the Athletic’s Kevin Fishbain. โ€œI think I have a pretty good level of empathy, so I just put myself in his shoes, and thatโ€™s a bad situation. It was really unfortunate that was like the first thing Iโ€™ve had to deal with. The only way I can describe it is, I think with anything in decision-making, thereโ€™s a business decision that has to be made, but thereโ€™s also your personal emotions that are in it as well. The business side was something I felt comfortable doing because of the information we received and what my job is, and thatโ€™s to protect the Bears and make sound decisions. Itโ€™s the personal side that was hard.”
